Dashi presents this strong and beautiful animal in the state of a hunt. The lion appears in an energised and highly-charged spirit, which you can tell from the alertness of its posture, the menacing face and his tail raised high in triumph. The lion species is known as one of the strongest animals on our planet, but the sculpture exudes both beauty and grace, as well as power. When Dashi saw this onyx, he immediately remembered the art of the ruined city of Persepolis, the ancient Persian capital, whose artefacts are housed within London’s British Museum. The gold ornamentation of the lion’s mane and muzzle, combined with the horizontal lines of the stone, suggest a traditional image of a lion as it would have been portrayed in the ancient cultures of the East.
